GOVERNOR FLETCHER TO DISTRIBUTE EMERGENCY ALERT WEATHER RADIOS IN BURKESVILLE
Residents, businesses in the Cumberland River flood inundation area to receive radios
FRANKFORT, Ky. – Governor Ernie Fletcher will be in Burkesville this Saturday, March 24, 2007, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Central time to distribute emergency alert weather radios to residents and businesses in the Cumberland River flood inundation area. The event will take place at the Veterans Memorial Community Center located at 213 Upper River St.
This week, residents and businesses in the affected areas will receive cards via mail providing them with distribution information. Each individual receiving a card must bring the card and a proof of residency (photo ID or utility bill) to receive a radio. Individuals who are disabled or have special needs and are unable to pick up their radio may call the Lake Cumberland Community Action Agency at 1-800-928-6382 and a radio will be delivered to them.
Residents and businesses receiving cards are welcome between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Central time.

New no-wake zone slated for Lake Cumberland near Burnside in Pulaski County
Frankfort, Ky. – An 800-yard no-wake zone is being created on Lake Cumberland near Burnside to help protect the water intake of a lakeside power plant. Buoys will be placed in the area within the next few weeks with enforcement of the no-wake zone to commence afterward.
Officials at East Kentucky Power Cooperative requested the change to help protect the water intake for the John Sherman Cooper Power Station. For the next 5-7 years, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plans to keep the lake at a lower level while repairs are being made to Lake Cumberland’s Wolf Creek Dam.
Because of the lower level, the current intake is located only a few feet underneath the surface. Officials at the power cooperative are concerned that a number of large wakes created during the summer boating season could reduce water over the intake to the point where the pumps could be damaged, creating a disruption to power production. At full capacity, the plant can generate enough electricity to power 31 cities the size of Somerset.
The no-wake zone will be located upstream of the U.S. 27 bridge.
LAKE CLEANUP
The Friends of Lake Cumberland are working with PRIDE and setting up a spring clean up for the lake. We will be working from all of the commercial docks and various ramps on the lake picking up trash.
They estimate that they'll have about 500 people helping that day. The date is set for Saturday April 14. The backup date is Saturday April 21. The time has not been set yet.

“Kentucky Afield” TV Probes Cumberland Concerns this Weekend
Frankfort, Ky. – “Kentucky Afield” television talks with experts and locals about the issues and impacts of lowering Lake Cumberland while dam repairs are underway during this weekend’s show, March 24 and 25, on KET.
RAMP CONDITIONS ACCORDING TO THE CORPS:
The following Corps operated and Commercial Marina boat ramps are usable at or near the target elevation 680” (* Due to recent heavy rainfall, lake elevations have been higher than the targeted 680 elevation and many ramps not shown on this list may be currently usable. However, lake levels are on the fall and these ramps are expected to change to the status of unusable again. Ramps are monitored on a daily basis and conditions are subject to change.) Lake predictions for March 9, 2007 are in the range of 685 elevation and by March 21, 2007 the 680 elevation range.

Lower Lake Cumberland: Kentucky Educational Television has a half-hour special this weekend on what tourists may expect at Lake Cumberland this summer, interviewing state and federal officials along with local dock owners on the effects of the repair work on the crumbling Wolf Creek Dam. The lake's level has been drastically reduced while dam repairs are made. The "Kentucky Afield" special, running at 8:30 p.m. Saturday (KET2), repeating 4 p.m. Sunday (KET1), makes the case the fishing may at least still be good, highlighting a 9-pound brown trout that host Tim Farmer recently pulled from Lake Cumberland's tail water.
